The Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) Alumni Association held its 7th National Convention, where it recognized the institution’s pioneer Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shehu Galadanchi and his successors with awards.
The ceremony, attended by members of the alma mater on Saturday in Sokoto, also saw the election of new leaders for the association from across the country.
The awardees at the event included the Nigerian Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Prof. Tijjani Bande, the Emir of Yauri, Dr Zayyanu Abdullahi, and Prof. Mahdi Adamu.
Others honoured were Prof. Abubakar Gwandu, Prof. Aminu Mika’ilu, Prof. Riskuwa Shehu, Prof. Abdullahi Zuru, and the current vice-chancellor, Prof. Lawal Bilbis.
Gov. Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State, an alumnus of the university, expressed appreciation for the contributions of the lecturers and the institution’s administration.
Aliyu, represented by his Deputy, Alhaji Idris Gobir, reiterated his administration’s commitment to education and support for the development of the university.
“The importance of education cannot be overstated and it is a necessary commitment towards a brighter future.
“Our administration will continue to prioritise education to achieve global standards.
“We will maintain and strengthen the relationship with UDUS and the support provided by the Sokoto state government,” he said
Aliyu sought the support and advice from members to govern the state successfully and encouraged them to continue their commitment to the university’s growth and development.
Alhaji Nasiru Gawuna, the immediate past Deputy Governor of Kano State and former National President of the association, emphasised the need for members’ unity in advancing the university’s development.
Prof. Nasiru Yawuri, the Vice-Chancellor of Al-Qalam University Katsina called for the appointment of alumni to the university’s governing board, similar to the practice with Polytechnics.
Yawuri stressed the importance of giving back to the institution that nurtured them.
He emphasised the everlasting connection to one’s Alma mater, stating, “It remains our legacy and our pride.”
Prof. Lawal Bilbis, the incumbent vice-chancellor of the institution expressed appreciation to the alumni for their sustained support.
The newly elected leaders of the association include Dr Buhari Kware as National President, Hajiya Amina Kolo as Vice President I, Abdullahi Tafida as Vice President II and Alhaji Mustapha Marafa as Vice President III.
The remaining leadership positions include Muhammad Hussain as Secretary General, Adamu Aliyu as Assistant Secretary I, Joseph Ode as Assistant Secretary II, Aishatu Gatawa as Treasurer and Dr Shuaibu Lapai as Financial Secretary.
Completing the team are Mr Aliyu Wurma as Legal Advisor, Mr Lawal Usman as Assistant Legal Advisor, Olaitan Akande as Publicity Secretary I, Shamsudden Kazaure as Publicity Secretary II, Mr Ismaila Yahaya as Ex-Officio I and Dr Maimuna Kadiri as Ex-Officio II.
