The Sokoto state government and correspondents chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, have agreed on the call off of the ongoing boycott by the chapel of coverage of government activities.
This is contained in a statement jointly signed and issued by the chairperson and secretary of chapel, Habibu Harisu and Ankeli Emmanuel on Friday.
According to the statement, the call-off of the boycott followed series of meetings and consultations with delegated members, officials of the chapel and that of the Council on one hand and the officials of the state Ministry of information, including the Special Adviser to the governor on Public Affairs, Abubakar Shekara, led by the Commissioner, Isa Bajini Galanchi on the other hand.
Riding from the meeting chaired by the Information Commissioner, which reviewed the incident that occurred between the members of the chapel and security operatives at the gate of the State Government House, the parties agreed to resolve the issues as well as work towards a more harmonious relationship in the service of the public.
The statement however emphatically reiterated that the chapel would continue to disregard press releases from other individuals, groups, politicians or institutions who fail to consider physical coverage of their events.
The chapel called on heads of security agencies in the state to sensitize their personnel on the cordial media-security relationship.
ASHENEWS recalls that members of correspondents chapel, on the 13 February 2021, began boycott of all government activities following harrasment, intimidation and molestation of their members by security personnel attached to Government House.
