ASHENEWS reports that the Niger State Commissioner for Land and Survey, Barrister Maurice Magaji, made an appearance at the Minna High Court No. 2 before Justice Mikailu to defend the state government in a case involving land acquisition.
The case was filed by eight plaintiffs from Gurara community against the Niger State Governor as the first defendant and the Commissioner as the second defendant.
Magaji stated that his presence in court was necessitated by the lack of lawyers handling cases for the ministry adding that his appearance would also encourage the counsels to put in their best.
He emphasized that his decision to personally appear in court was to be proactive and aimed at strengthening the ministry’s defense in critical land matters and providing encouragement to state lawyers who have been diligently handling government cases in the ministry.
“Today, I appeared in court to advocate for the state on this matter of land acquisition. My appearance is not just because of the limited number of lawyers we have but also to boost the morale of our legal team and ensure that cases are handled with the utmost commitment,” the Commissioner explained.
The Commissioner further stated that this proactive step will occasionally involve him directly participating in court proceedings as it involves the ministry.
According to him, his role as Commissioner goes beyond administrative duties such as treating files he intends to actively defend the state’s interests in court and work on resolving lingering land issues promptly.
Barrister Magaji further noted that the ministry is grappling with numerous unresolved legal cases, some of which have dragged on for years. His involvement, he said, would help fast-track these cases and showcase a commitment to efficient governance.
“This is about being proactive and ensuring that we do not allow cases to linger indefinitely. There are many cases on our table, and my active participation will help expedite the resolution process,” he said.
“This will not be a one-time occurrence. As a lawyer, I will continue to appear in court when necessary, defending the government and ensuring that we meet the expectations of our people,” he assured.
