ASHENEWS reports that the Niger state governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago has donated N20 million on behalf of himself and his cabinet members to the 2024 Armed Forces Remembrance Day Emblem Fund.
The governor stated this when he received members of the Nigerian Legion, Niger state chapter at the Government House in Minna on Wednesday.
Bago who stressed the need for Nigerians to support its fallen heroes said that the state government remains committed to partnering with the legion, especially in the area of security.
The governor while acknowledging the sacrifices of the veterans assured that the state government in its efforts to improve the living standard of veterans was working towards empowering them to reduce their dependence on stipends.
He said that his administration would work with the legion to train vigilantes, park rangers as well as forest guards in the state.
In his address, the Chairman of the Legion, Mamuda Baba Ahmed appealed to the state government to help offset pledges of over N15 million owed by the previous administration in the state.
“The Nigerian Legion having suffered neglect over time is faced with challenges ranging from failure to redeem pledges amounting to N15 million made by the former state government during the yearly armed forces Remembrance Day and appeal week of 2021,2022 and 2023 respectively,“ he said.
Ahmed also appealed to Nigerians to support the country’s fallen heroes who paid the supreme price for the country.
