Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State says four new motor parks under construction by his administration will soon be completed and put into operation.
Aliyu disclosed this on Thursday while visiting the scene of a fire outbreak at the Sokoto Central Motor Park, where he sympathised with affected traders and transporters.
He explained that the projects are part of efforts to address congestion in existing motor parks, which he said has been worsened by population growth.
According to the governor, the new facilities, sited in different parts of the metropolis, are at various stages of completion and will help decongest the Sokoto Central Motor Park.
“Our motor parks are gradually becoming congested due to the increase in population, hence the need to decongest them,” he said.
The governor linked the recent fire incident partly to overcrowding at the central park and stressed the importance of expanding infrastructure to improve safety and efficiency.
Aliyu assured victims of the fire of government support to enable them recover and resume their businesses, while urging residents to adhere strictly to safety regulations, particularly in handling inflammable materials.
He also called for continued public support and prayers for his administration to deliver more development projects across the state.
Earlier, the State Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Nasiru Aliyu Dan Tsoho, said no lives were lost in the incident, although properties were destroyed.
He commended the governor for visiting the scene, describing it as a demonstration of concern for the people.
The governor was accompanied by top government officials and political office holders during the visit.
