Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto state has vowed to prioritise mechanised agriculture in order to revive the sector in order to make it meet the current demands of the people for full commercialisation.
The Governor spoke in Sokoto on Sunday when he received the report of the committee set up to revive agriculture in the state, assuring that the new policy would capture the needs of small and large scale farmers.
Tambuwal further assured that government would provide initial incentives to top political office holders and individual businessmen to own and operate large scale farms as a pilot scheme for the proper take-off of the planned mechanised farmlands.
“It becomes imperative for the government to consider this option so as to boost revenue and food security,” he stressed.
In order to ensure effective implementation of the report, Tambuwal said “experts from the World Food Programme and the Federal Ministry of Agriculture will be invited to make inputs.”
He assured that government would provide enabling environment for any corporate organisation that wishes to engage in commercial agriculture in Sokoto in order to provide for positive return on investment.
Chairman of the committee and former deputy governor in the state, Alhaji Chiso Dattijo said the committee was set up by the state government to map out strategies in revitalizing agriculture in the state.
He commended governor Tambuwal for giving them the opportunity to serve.
