In considering the importance of agricultural value-chain, governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has assured that his administration would continue with providing fertiliser subsidy to farmers across the state.

According to the governor, this was aimed at boosting food production, as well as increasing farmers’ purchasing power, thereby resulting in an ultimately  improved farm yield in the state.

Tambuwal who spoke at an informal meeting with members of commodity associations in Sokoto, said that the ultimate goal was to stimulate economic growth and ensure reduction in poverty level among rural populace.

He said all over the world, governments come in to assist farmers with various subsidies, as such “Sokoto government will not allow market forces to determine price of such an important commodity.”‎

The governor disclosed that his administration had procured about 9, 000 metric tonnes of assorted fertilisers, which comprised of NPK and Urea at the cost of N1.2 billion for distribution to farmers for this year’s farming season.

He also revealed that the NPK would be sold at a subsidised rate of N1,700 per bag while Urea cost N1,800.

Tambuwal added that this year’s supply had doubled the amount against last year and urged the people, especially the youth, to avail themselves of those opportunities and embrace farming.
