Nigeria cements its status as Africa’s powerhouse, ranking as the continent’s largest producer of crude oil, palm oil, and rice, according to fresh data from Alpha Index. These rankings spotlight Africa’s dominance in global resources, from energy to agriculture.

Ghana leads gold production, powering its export economy. The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) dominates copper and cobalt, critical for batteries and electronics. Botswana rules diamonds, Ethiopia coffee, and South Africa boasts platinum, iron ore, manganese, sugar, maize, and timber.

Côte d’Ivoire excels in cocoa and cashews, Kenya in tea, Guinea in bauxite, Morocco in phosphates, Namibia in uranium, Algeria in natural gas, Benin in cotton, Zimbabwe in tobacco, Tanzania in sisal, Madagascar in vanilla, and Egypt in tomatoes, onions, and wheat.

Nigeria’s triple crown in oil, palm oil, and rice underscores its pivotal role in energy security and food systems, even as it trails Algeria slightly in natural gas. Analysts say these strengths could boost intra-African trade under AfCFTA, if infrastructure and sustainability improve.
