ASHENEWS reports that in a major step toward enhancing food security and advancing mechanized agriculture, Niger State Governor Mohammed Bago has officially launched the corn harvest for Niger Foods.
The launch event, held at a corn farm near Bida, saw the governor operating a combine harvester to kickstart the harvest season.
Governor Bago announced that over 100,000 hectares of corn fields, managed by Niger Foods, are now ready for harvest.
He announced the deployment of 100 combine harvesters across these fields, which he said would help minimize post-harvest losses by 80-90 percent.
The state expects to produce approximately one million metric tonnes of corn this year, in addition to other crops like rice, soybeans, sesame, millet, and guinea corn, Bago said.
As part of his “Feed the Nation” initiative, the governor urged the State Task Force on Price Control to implement measures to prevent price hikes caused by food aggregators stockpiling produce in warehouses.
During his visit, the governor also stopped at the Emi Guye community near the farm, where he interacted with residents and directed that water and solar energy infrastructure be installed to support local needs.
The village head of Emi Guye, Usman Mohammed, expressed gratitude on behalf of the community, praising Governor Bago’s commitment to development across Niger State.
