Farmers in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa have expressed optimism for a productive farming season this year.
The farmers, however, appealed for the timely distribution of fertilizers and other farm inputs to ensure bumper harvests.
In separate interviews with reporters on Monday, a cross-section of farmers said the commencement of rainfall had raised hopes for improved agricultural activities across the state.
Aliyu Mustapha, one of them, said he was optimistic the season would be fruitful if the rainfall remains consistent.
“We thank God that the rain has started, and we expect it to be steady and sufficient for crops to grow well. We are preparing our farms and praying for a successful season.
“We, however, appeal to the government and relevant stakeholders to ensure fertilizers and other farm inputs are not only made available but also affordable,” he said.
Similarly, Yunusa Ibrahim said farmers were eager to begin full farming activities but were concerned about rising input costs.
According to him, many farmers find it difficult to purchase fertilizers, improved seeds, and chemicals due to high prices.
“If the government can support farmers with subsidized inputs, it will go a long way in boosting food production and improving livelihoods,” he said.
Also speaking, Shafi’u Hussain expressed hope that the rainy season would bring relief after months of dry weather and heat.
He said favorable rainfall patterns would encourage farmers to cultivate larger portions of land and increase crop yields.
“Agriculture is the backbone of our communities, and many families depend on it for survival,” Hussain said.
On her part, Jummai Rabi’u, a widow and small-scale farmer, said she looked forward to a successful season to support her family.
She noted that many women in farming face challenges accessing inputs and financial support.
“The season gives us hope because farming is our main source of income.
“We pray for abundant rain and assistance to help us produce enough food for our families and the market,” she said.
The respondents urged government agencies, development partners, and financial institutions to provide improved seeds, fertilizers, and other support to enhance productivity.
They also called for continued sensitization on modern farming practices to help farmers maximize yields.
It was reported that agriculture remains a major source of livelihood in Jigawa, with thousands of households depending on rain-fed farming for income and food security.
