Agricultural experts have said that foods produced using biotechnology were safe and would enable production of more foods in Nigeria owing to the increasing population and COVID-19 pandemic.
The experts made the assertion at a day-three virtual media briefing of the African Green Revolution Summit 2020 with the theme: Feed the cities, Grow the Continent: Leveraging Urban Food Markets to achieve Sustainable Food System in Africa, currently holding in Kigali, Rwanda.
Ms Patience Koku, Chief Executive Officer, Replenish Farms said that biotechnology would help Africa overcome the challenge in the food box.
Koku said that all the researches carried out by experts and scientists in field, showed that biotechnology was safe and only required technology to produce more food for the continent.
“I make bold to say that biotech food is safe and gives us the ability to grow more foods using technology.
“Every research carried out shows that biotech is safe. It will help Africa overcome the challenges in the food box.
“Africa currently imports a lot of grains which are Genetically Modified (GMOs), we should be worried about that and not biotech foods,” she said.
Koku, however, called for more advocacy about how safe it is to consume biotech foods.
