Meet the “Ayam Cemani”, a rare and striking chicken from Indonesia that fascinates farmers and collectors worldwide. The chicken can cost up to $9,000.

All-black appearance: Ayam Cemani is known for its entirely black body—feathers, beak, tongue, skin, and even bones! This unique trait is caused by a genetic mutation called fibromelanosis.

Rarity makes it expensive: These chickens are extremely rare. Limited supply and high demand drive the price up, making them the most expensive chicken in the world.

Cultural significance: In Indonesia, this chicken is valued in rituals and traditional ceremonies. It is believed to bring luck, prosperity, and spiritual power.

Size and behavior: Ayam Cemani is medium-sized with a calm temperament. They are hardy birds, making them easy to keep in both backyard and small-scale farming setups.

Egg production: While stunning, they are not the most prolific layers—laying around 80–100 eggs per year. Their main value is in rarity and aesthetics, not high egg production.

Why people love them:

Stunning all-black appearance

Rare and exotic

Cultural and mystical significance

Great for ornamental and hobby farming

Farming tips

If you plan to rear Ayam Cemani:

Provide proper nutrition to maintain health and feather quality

Keep them safe from predators

Ensure breeding stock is carefully selected to maintain the black trait

Fun fact

Despite their high price, many collectors and hobby farmers are willing to pay for Ayam Cemani as a status symbol or ornamental bird, not just for meat or eggs. Ayam isn’t just a chicken. It’s a living piece of art and cultural heritage. Would you dare to raise one?
