The Belgian Ambassador to Nigeria, Pieter Leenknegt, has disclosed that cocoa has surpassed crude oil as Nigeria’s main export to Belgium since 2024.
Leenknegt made this known during a courtesy visit to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, at his palace in Ibadan on Tuesday.
He said Belgium, famous for its chocolate industry, now relies more on Nigerian cocoa as a key raw material.
“Oyo State is known for its cocoa production, and since 2024, cocoa has overtaken crude oil as Nigeria’s top export to Belgium. The rising price of cocoa is good news for farmers, as it means better livelihoods,” Leenknegt said.
He added that the development reflects growing diversification in Nigeria–Belgium trade relations beyond fossil fuels.
The envoy, who noted that the Olubadan is an alumnus of the University of Liège in Belgium, said he was delighted to visit the monarch shortly after his coronation.
Leenknegt also hinted that French-speaking ambassadors in Nigeria—Les Ambassadeurs de la Francophonie—are considering a visit to Oyo State.
In his response, Oba Ladoja welcomed the initiative, saying it would promote partnerships for development and create job opportunities for young people.
“The responsibilities of a king today go beyond glamour and celebration; they are a call to duty and service,” the Olubadan said.
