Torrential rainfall has caused severe flooding that submerged the palace of a traditional ruler of Ogidi Kingdom in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra state, Alexander Uzo Onyido.
A report by ThePondNews, says the heavy downpour overwhelmed drainage channels in the area, sending floodwaves into the monarch’s residence and forcing him to evacuate the palace.
The incident has renewed concerns over the worsening impact of flooding and poor drainage infrastructure in parts of the Southeast, where communities have continued to experience destruction of homes, roads and other public infrastructure during the rainy season.
Residents said the flooding was aggravated by the intensity of the rainfall and inadequate drainage capacity, leaving the monarch’s palace and surrounding areas inundated.
The development adds to growing reports of flood and erosion-related disasters across Anambra State, where torrential rains have in recent months damaged roads, threatened homes and disrupted economic activities.
Environmental experts have repeatedly linked the increasing vulnerability of communities to intense rainfall, poor drainage systems, deforestation, changing land-use patterns and other human activities that accelerate flooding and erosion.
Residents in affected communities have consequently called for urgent intervention by the government to improve drainage infrastructure, address erosion sites and strengthen flood-prevention measures.
The latest incident has also highlighted the fact that flooding is increasingly affecting not only ordinary residents but also traditional institutions and other critical community structures.
Authorities are expected to assess the extent of damage and provide necessary assistance to the affected monarch and residents as the rainy season continues.
