The Sokoto State Government has announced a donation of ₦20 million, 100 bags of food items, and the provision of 20 motorized boats with life jackets to support victims and riverine communities following Sunday’s boat mishap in Goronyo Local Government Area.
It also confirmed the death of four passengers in the recent boat mishap at Kojiyo Village, Goronyo Local Government Area, where five persons remain missing and 41 others were rescued.
The Deputy Governor, Idris Muhammed Gobir, made the announcement during a condolence visit to Kojiyo Village, where the tragic incident occurred. He said two of the boats have already been allocated to Goronyo Local Government to strengthen safety and transportation across the waterways.
The gesture comes in the wake of a boat accident along the Sokoto Rima River on Sunday, August 16, 2025, which claimed the lives of four passengers, left five missing, and saw 41 others rescued.
Confirming the figures, the Director General Press Affairs and Publicity, Government House Sokoto, Abubakar Bawa, explained that the confirmation followed a thorough search and fact-finding exercise jointly carried out by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), and the Goronyo Local Government Council.
The state government said the intervention is part of measures to cushion the effect of the tragedy on affected families and to prevent future occurrences in riverine communities.
