ASHENEWS reports that the Niger State Governor, Mohammed Bago, has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic boat mishap that claimed numerous lives, including women and children, at Gbajibo Community in Mokwa Local Government Area.
The accident occurred on the River Niger, upstream of the Jebba Dam, as a boat carrying around 300 passengers capsized during a journey from Mundi Community for a Maulud celebration.
In a condolence message released by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, Governor Bago described the incident as heartbreaking and unfortunate.
He extended his sympathies to the leadership and people of Mokwa LGA, as well as the families of the victims.
Governor Bago expressed concern over the frequent occurrences of boat accidents in the state in recent years, noting that these tragic incidents have become worrisome.
He pledged that the government would intensify efforts to ensure strict compliance with safety measures to prevent future mishaps.
The governor also prayed for Allah’s mercy on the souls of the departed and wished a swift recovery for those injured in the accident.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), in collaboration with local divers, volunteers, and relevant authorities, has launched search and rescue operations.
So far, 150 people have been rescued alive, and 16 bodies have been recovered. Rescue efforts are ongoing.
