The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on Tuesday distributed relief materials to victims of flooding in Jalingo and Yorro Local Government Areas of Taraba State.
Speaking at the formal launch of the distribution, the Director-General of NEMA, Mrs Zubaida Umar, said the items were meant to provide succour to affected individuals and communities.
Umar, who was represented by the Assistant Chief Search and Rescue Officer of the Yola Operations Office, Mr Yusuf Attach, said the intervention was part of the Federal Government’s response to recent flood incidents in the affected areas.
She said the provision of food and non-food items further demonstrated the Federal Government’s concern and President Bola Tinubu’s sensitivity to the plight of Nigerians affected by disasters.
The NEMA boss advised beneficiaries to make proper use of the items, noting that they were intended to cushion the impact of the floods on their livelihoods.
In his remarks, Rep. Sadiq Abass, representing the Jalingo, Zing and Yorro Federal Constituency, commended President Tinubu for the prompt intervention on behalf of his constituents.
Abass, who was represented by Mr Saad Sambo, a Senior Legislative Officer to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, said the gesture aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the current administration.
He urged beneficiaries not to regard the relief materials as compensation but as a demonstration of the government’s commitment to alleviating their suffering.
Abass described the intervention as a reflection of the government’s humanitarian responsibility and commitment to citizens’ welfare, adding that he remained determined to provide effective representation for his constituents.
He also cautioned beneficiaries against selling the relief items, urging them to use the materials to support their families.
One of the beneficiaries, Mr David Musa, expressed gratitude to the Federal Government for the intervention.
Musa also commended Abass for facilitating the distribution of the relief materials, saying the items would go a long way in easing their hardship during the Yuletide season.
Another beneficiary, Mrs Mariam Isa, also thanked the Federal Government and Abass for the support.
Isa assured that she would not sell the items but would use them to support her family.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the relief materials included bags of rice and maize, salt, cartons of seasoning cubes, tomato paste, vegetable oil, blankets and clothing, among others.
