The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has given financial support to street sweepers who got injured while working. They also gave money to the families of sweepers who died while doing their jobs.
LAWMA’s Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said in a statement on Thursday that giving out the cheques shows LAWMA truly cares about the well-being of its sanitation workers.
He said the agency is committed to keeping its workers safe and helping them when needed. He also called the workers environmental heroes for helping to keep Lagos clean and livable.
“Our sanitation workers take big risks every day to keep the environment clean,” Gbadegesin said.
“As an organisation that cares, we must support them—not just by talking, but by taking real action—especially when something bad happens while they’re working.”
“This support is our way of saying: we see your hard work, we appreciate it, and we will always be here for you,” he added.
He explained that the financial help is part of a full support plan for LAWMA workers. This plan includes accident support, insurance, health checks, and safety training.
Gbadegesin also said the plan fits with LAWMA’s larger goals—respecting human life, fairness, and including everyone. He added that no worker should be left alone to suffer after getting hurt on the job.
“At LAWMA, we believe it’s necessary to protect our workers,” he said.”
As we work to improve waste management in Lagos, we are also investing in the people doing the job. Their health and safety are a top priority,” he added.
The CEO also reminded the workers to always be careful, especially in busy traffic areas and when working at night.
He promised that LAWMA would continue to improve safety rules to reduce the chance of workplace accidents.
Finally, he said this cheque presentation is just one of the many ways LAWMA is working to create a safe and respectful workplace for all sanitation workers across Lagos.
