The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has apprehended a truck driver for allegedly causing the death of a pedestrian and a motorcyclist on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway.
LASTMA General Manager, Mr Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Lagos. The statement was signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Mr Taofig Adebayo.
Bakare-Oki described the accident, which occurred at the Iyana-Iba Flyover near Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, as regrettable.
According to him, preliminary findings showed that the fully-loaded truck was speeding from the Volkswagen area towards Badagry when it knocked down a pedestrian and failed to stop.
“A motorcyclist, accompanied by a sympathiser, pursued the fleeing truck. The driver rammed into the motorcycle, killing the motorcyclist, while the accompanying person escaped unhurt,” he said.
“Operatives of the LASTMA Night Gang Surveillance and Monitoring Patrol Team deployed along the Badagry Expressway corridor evacuated the deceased motorcyclist, who was trapped under the front tyre of the bucket truck,” Bakare-Oki added.
He said the driver has been handed over to the Police at Okokomaiko and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for further investigation.
The LASTMA boss condoled with the families of the victims, warned against reckless driving, and reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to enforcing traffic regulations and improving road safety.
