Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State has commissioned a key phase of a 40-million-gallon-per-day water supply project, reaffirming his administration’s resolve to deliver clean and steady water to residents across the metropolis.
Speaking during the commissioning of the Old Airport Water Scheme on Monday, June 23, 2025, Governor Aliyu described the project as a “fulfilled promise” aimed at reducing the long-standing suffering caused by acute water shortages in the state capital.
The event was graced by the Governor of Yobe State, Mai Mala Buni, who was commended for honouring the invitation despite his tight schedule. Governor Aliyu expressed deep gratitude, describing Buni’s presence as a strong gesture of solidarity.
“When we assumed office, residents were buying a jerrycan of water for as high as N300. Even the little water supplied was poorly treated due to a lack of chemicals,” Aliyu recalled. “Today, we are witnessing progress—a deliberate turnaround.”
The governor revealed that six township water schemes, originally initiated by former Governor Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, are now being completed under his administration for N14.1 billion.
These include the Tamaje Water Scheme, the Old Airport Water Scheme, the Gagi Water Scheme, the Mana Water Scheme, the Runjin Sambo Water Scheme, and the Ruga Liman Water Scheme.
The Old Airport Water Scheme, now operational, will supply 3 million gallons per day, while the full set of six schemes is expected to deliver 40 million gallons daily upon completion.
Governor Aliyu also addressed recent challenges caused by low electricity supply and dwindling water levels from rivers. He noted that the state has replaced obsolete equipment and secured alternative power sources to sustain water pumping operations.
“These are not just projects—they are instruments of empowerment, of resilience, and of progress,” he said. “To the people of Sokoto, this is your victory. With your continued support, we will reach even greater heights.”
He concluded by thanking contractors, engineers, and community leaders for their dedication, and once again appreciated Governor Buni for celebrating the milestone with the people of Sokoto.
The commissioning marks another step in the implementation of Governor Aliyu’s Smart Agenda, aimed at improving infrastructure and public welfare across Sokoto State.
