Several communities in Kunini, Lau Local Government Area of Taraba State, have been badly flooded after heavy rainfall on Thursday morning.
The downpour, which lasted for hours, destroyed farmlands, killed animals, and displaced hundreds of residents from their homes.
Many families also lost valuable household items worth millions of naira as the floodwater swept through their communities.
Taraba State Commissioner for Urban and Rural Development, Peter Julius, who hails from the affected area, described the situation as massive and devastating.
“The flood is very serious and still ongoing. We are struggling to save people and their belongings. Properties worth millions have been destroyed, and many animals carried away by the water. Our first priority now is to relocate victims, especially women and children, to safer places. This is indeed a difficult time for our people,” Julius said.
A community leader, Yohana Kwana, explained that the flood was the worst the people of Kunini had seen in their history.
“We have lived here for centuries. Yes, water used to come, but it always passed through the channels. It has never entered and destroyed homes like this before. We are pleading with both the federal and state governments to help us. We have lost almost everything,” he said.
Kwana added that life would be very hard for survivors as their crops had been washed away, their animals drowned, and their foodstuffs soaked. He appealed to the government and well-meaning individuals to come to their rescue.
