The Sokoto state government has commenced the planting of over 200,000 trees across the state, in a step to combate climate change and plastic pollution. The initiative is supported by UNICEF, UNDP, and UNEP.
First held in 1973, the World Environment Day has been a platform for raising awareness on environmental issues as marine pollution, overpopulation, global warming, sustainable development and wildlife crime. It is a global platform for public outreach. The 2025’s theme is: “Say No to Plastic Waste and Tree Plantation.”
The Commissioner for Environment, Nura Muhammad Tangaza, at the inauguration of the tree planting, held at Hafsatu Ahmad Bello Secondary School in Sokoto, said the state government will provide free variety of economic and ornamental tree seedlings to the people.
He said the free seedlings would encourage local communities to take an active role in restoring degraded lands and building resilience against drought.
“We are committed to tackling deforestation and its consequences. This campaign is not only about trees, but about securing our future. We call on all citizens to join this effort for a cleaner and greener Sokoto,” the Commissioner said.
In his message, the UNICEF’s Chief of Sokoto Field Office, Mr. Michael Juma, delivered on his behalf by the WASH Officer, Mr. Ebri Eteng, emphasized the role of youth in leading climate action. He called on young people to act as climate ambassadors and advocates for responsible plastic use.
“Tree planting and reducing plastic waste are critical global priorities. Youth must champion this cause to preserve our environment for generations to come,” Eteng said.
Road walk
As part of the event, participants walked from Hafsatu Ahmad Bello Secondary School in Sokoto through to CBN office and Dankani Guest Palace, while creating public awareness on plastic pollution, traversing the . The walk was accompanied by a plastic waste cleanup exercise, symbolizing the dual focus of the day: environmental restoration and behavioral change.
Media dialogue
The walk culminated in a media dialogue at the Dankani Guest Palace environmental experts and advocates.
Dr. Abubakar Mohammed Gumi of the Department of Plant Science, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS), presented a paper outlining actionable strategies for land restoration and adaptation against climate challenges.
Prof. Murtala Abubakar Gada of the Centre for Environment and General Studies, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS), also stressed the importance of providing alternative energy sources to curb the rampant use of firewood, which contributes to deforestation
The attendance of students of secondary schools across the state, reinforced the campaign’s focus on youth engagement and climate education.
