Former Military President Ibrahim Babangida has paid tribute to the late veteran journalist Yakubu Mohammed, describing him as a symbol of integrity, humility, and professionalism in Nigeria’s media landscape.
Babangida made the tribute on Thursday in Lagos at the unveiling of the Newswatch 5 Lecture Series/Tribute Session for Mohammed. His speech was read at the event by veteran journalist Malam Mohammed Haruna. Mohammed passed away on January 13.
The late Dele Giwa, Dan Agbese, Yakubu Mohammed, Ray Ekpu, and Soji Akinrinade were the founding Newswatch journalists. The event was organized by the Olori Janet Afolabi Foundation. Janet Afolabi, wife of the traditional ruler of Apomu in Osun State, Oba Kayode Afolabi, is a former Newswatch staff member.
Babangida said Mohammed’s death, coming shortly after Agbese’s, was a huge loss to journalism and society. He emphasized that while journalists are often seen as adversaries of leaders, their role in shaping governance and reflecting public opinion is indispensable.
“A leader needs the friendship and confidence of journalists, not only to communicate policies effectively but also to stay informed about the mood of the nation,” he said.
He described Mohammed as part of a “legendary quartet” that set enduring standards for journalism in Nigeria and praised his memoir, Beyond Expectations, for providing insights into media history and clarifying controversies such as Dele Giwa’s death.
Babangida warned against fake news and stressed that journalism must remain rooted in facts and ethical standards. He urged media professionals to uphold integrity and professionalism, ensuring Mohammed’s legacy inspires higher standards.
Haruna described Mohammed as a humble and selfless journalist who rose through the ranks of New Nigerian Newspaper and Concord Group before co-founding Newswatch. Ray Ekpu echoed this, calling Mohammed the brain behind Newswatch and urging younger journalists to emulate his integrity and thoroughness.
The event brought together traditional rulers, Mohammed’s family, journalists, media executives, and other stakeholders to celebrate his life and contributions.
