The Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), has expressed commitment to achieving energy sufficiency in the country.
Prof. Akinade Olatunji, the President of NMSG said this in an interview in Abuja on Monday.
He said that the NMGS has been working with relevant stakeholders to explore all options towards enhancing Nigeria’s energy sufficiency for overall national growth.
“The roles of our members in oil and gas sector are numerous and well documented, from finding the oil and gas reserves to the production and utilisation for economic growth.
“Even as there is a current global cry for energy transition to renewables, our members are in forefront of this charge to ensure that the energy sufficiency is achieved by Nigeria,” he added.
On the mining sector, Olatunji said that there was massive improvement in the generation of geoscience data which had excited the interest of investors.
He described the outlook of Nigeria’s mineral sector as good, adding that the NMGS and other stakeholders have been on the right trajectory in exploring the huge potentials in the sector.
The NMSG president, however, said that the sector still require massive funding, and implementation of reforms and strengthening existing programmes.
“The sector does not need any distraction if we are to be taken seriously.
“The successes being recorded by private operators in the sector are beginning to attract the global mining investors’ attention.
“The NMGS is excited that the new administration has also pledged to ensure that the solid minerals sector remains in the front burner of its plans for ensuring diversification of the Nigerian economy,’’ he added.
The president assured that the NMGS would continue to engage governments at all levels for better and effective working relationship.
“We are not a professional group that just identify problems, we provide solutions and willing in implementing the solutions,“ Olatunji said.
