Rarara’s ‘doctorate’: University says, thanks for the imagination, but no degree here

The European-American University (EAU) has poured cold water on claims that it conferred an honorary doctorate on Hausa political singer, Dauda Kahutu Rarara, at a glittering Abuja ceremony.

In a disclaimer posted on its official website, the University described the event at NICON Luxury Hotel as nothing more than a fraud “organized without the knowledge or consent of the University.”

EAU was blunt: neither Rarara nor the other names being paraded — Ahmed Saleh Jnr., Prof. Mustapha Abdullahi Bujawa, and Prof. Tarela Boroh — has ever been honoured with its degrees.

“These individuals are not of the University and have no legitimate connection with us,” the statement read.

The institution also disowned Musari Audu Isyaku, who styled himself as its Northern Nigeria representative, and flatly denied that Idris Aliyu was ever on its Governing Council. In fact, it said no such council exists, and Aliyu’s previous Fellowship had already been revoked over alleged fraudulent activities.

To clear the air further, EAU reminded the public that its former Vice Chancellor, Dr. Mrs. Josephine Egbuta, had been dismissed earlier this year and cannot act for the school in any capacity. The current Vice Chancellor, it stressed, is Professor Luca Scotto di Tella de’ Douglas di Castel di Ripa.

The University also took a swipe at “creative geography,” clarifying that while it is legally registered in France and holds a Royal Charter of Incorporation from Uganda’s Kingdom of Bunyoro-Kitara, it has no links whatsoever to Dominica or Panama — despite persistent rumours.

Determined to protect its name, EAU said it would work with Nigerian authorities to clamp down on fake certificates being circulated in its name and to prosecute those behind the charade.

Meanwhile, for those seeking legitimate recognition, the University announced that its official convocation in Nigeria will hold on November 15, 2025, followed by an awards ceremony in Malaysia in December.
