The Academic and non-academic staff of the Katsina State owned tertiary educational institutions have declared a two-week warning strike effective from the midnight of Monday, Jan.12, 2026
This was announced in a statement in Katsina on Monday by Muhammad Nasir-Gidado, the Chairman of the joint consultative forum of the institutions.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that Nasir-Gidado is also the Chairman, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic chapter.
According to him, the decision followed the state government’s persistent refusal to address the pressing welfare and institutional challenges affecting its members.
He, however, lamented that in spite of issuing a two-week ultimatum to the state government on Dec. 29, 2025, no concrete steps were taken to resolve the issues raised.
“Among the key demands of the unions are the non-approval and non-implementation of the 35 per cent and 25 per cent salary increments for staff of the affected institutions.
“There is also the prolonged delay in the proper placement of Consolidated Tertiary Institutions Salary Structure (CONTISS 15) non-migrated staff,” he said.
According to Nasir-Gidado, the unions also condemned what they described as an unsympathetic increase in students’ registration fees.
He said that the policy failed to consider the prevailing economic hardship and had significantly affected student enrolment.
The forum’s Chairman said that the government’s inaction had left the unions with no alternative but to embark on the warning strike to save the institutions from total collapse.
“It is with deep regret that we inform the general public that all twelve staff unions across the affected tertiary institutions have resolved to commence a two-week warning strike,” he said.
According to him, the institutions affected by the strike include Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic, Isa Kaita College of Education Dutsinma, and Yusuf Bala Usman College of Education and Legal Studies Daura.
Others are the College of Nursing Sciences, Katsina (Katsina and Malumfashi campuses), College of Health Sciences and Technology (Daura and Kankia campuses), and Katsina State Institute of Technology and Management.
He appealed to the parents, students, and the public for understanding and patience, stressing that the action was not taken lightly but was necessitated by the government’s failure to resolve lingering issues despite repeated engagements.
“Consequently, all the affiliate unions have been directed to fully comply with the strike directive and await further instructions as developments unfold,” Nasir-Gidado announced.
