Bayero University Kano (BUK) has retained its position as the leading Nigerian university in international outlook for the third consecutive year, reinforcing its growing reputation for global academic engagement.
The latest assessment, based on the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2026, places BUK ahead of its peers in the international outlook metric—an indicator that evaluates the proportion of international students and staff, as well as cross-border research collaborations.
The ranking underscores BUK’s sustained progress in fostering international partnerships and attracting global academic participation, despite broader structural challenges facing Nigeria’s higher education sector.
Although the university ranks within the 1001–1200 global band overall, it continues to distinguish itself nationally through its strong performance in global engagement metrics.
Across Nigeria, universities showed varied strengths in the 2026 rankings. While the University of Ibadan emerged as the country’s top-ranked institution overall, and the University of Lagos posted the highest research quality score, BUK stood out for its internationalisation efforts.
The THE rankings evaluated over 2,000 universities worldwide using indicators such as teaching, research environment, research quality, industry income, and international outlook.
Analysts say BUK’s consistent leadership in international outlook reflects deliberate institutional strategies to expand global linkages and enhance collaborative research, positioning the university as a key player in Nigeria’s push for greater academic visibility on the world stage.
