The Kaduna State Head of Service, Mrs. Jummai Bako, has been honoured with an Award of Excellence in Leadership and Transformative Reforms in Workers’ Welfare.

The award was presented by the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU), Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya Chapter, during its get-together and awards ceremony held in Gidan Waya on Wednesday.

While receiving the award, Bako thanked the union for the recognition and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to improving staff welfare and institutional performance.

She commended the academic staff for their dedication to delivering quality teacher education and producing graduates who are making significant impacts across the country. She urged them to sustain the momentum of excellence.

“Your contributions to teacher education in Kaduna State are visible and impactful. I encourage you to maintain this tempo of excellence,” she said.

Earlier, COEASU Chairman, Dr. Christopher Yerima, said Bako was honoured for her exceptional leadership and commitment to improving workers’ welfare in the state.

Yerima highlighted that the college currently has 80 PhD holders contributing to academic excellence. He appealed to Governor Uba Sani to review Order 2 of the 65-year retirement policy, noting that it contradicts the College of Education Law of 2018 (as amended).

He also called for the release of White Papers from the last two visitation panels, the construction of internal roads at the permanent site, and the completion of the abandoned administrative block and students’ clinic.

Additionally, Yerima urged the state government to pay the outstanding 30 per cent of the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS) and Consolidated Tertiary Education Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS).

The Provost of the college, Dr. Ayuba Aku, represented by the Deputy Provost (Administration), Dr. Grace Tabat, highlighted the institution’s achievements, including being named the top-performing College of Education in Nigeria for 2025 admissions by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).

Chairman of the occasion, Associate Prof. Bashir Idris, commended COEASU for promoting excellence and urged the award recipients to continue serving with dedication.

Other recipients honoured at the event include former Provost Mr. Ishaya Dari Akau, Acting Provost Abdullahi Mohammad, Registrar Mr. Elisha Bisalla, and other academic and management staff.
