The Sokoto State University, Sokoto on Wednesday, 10th May 2023 matriculated 2,902 for the 2022/2023 Academic Session.

The Vice Chancellor of the institution, Professor Bashir Garba, while addressing the students said that the matriculated students were for the 2020/2021 and 2022/2023 merged Academic Sessions.

“For the 2021/2022 academics session, the University received a total of 3,579 undergraduates applications out of which 1,789 candidates gained admission into their prospective programs of interest.

“While for the 2022/2023 academic session, a total of 6,480 candidates applied for admission but only 2,626 making hundred percent of the total quota, secured admission for the various degree programs of the University.

“This brings the total admitted candidates for the two academic sessions to 4,415 students out of which only 2,902 students registered for the combined academic session, “he said.

The Vice-Chancellor, while admonishing the students against anti-social vices, urged them to desist from indulging in cultism and all forms of vices.

Prof. Garba, while applauding the effort of the Sokoto state government for its support to the University, however, appealed to the state government to consider paying the visiting and sabbatical lecturers as and when due.

According to him, the university was relying on the support of this category of lecturers, most especially for the Postgraduate programs to sustain academic activities.

On the development strides recorded by the institution, the Vice-Chancellor announced the completion of the faculties of Engineering and Agriculture, alongside the Centre for the Study of the Sokoto Caliphate.

He said that the construction of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computing has reached an advanced level of completion.

On its part, the Sokoto State government assured of its commitment to ensuring the development of the institution to meet with its counterpart across the country and even beyond.

The State Commissioner, Ministry for Higher Education, Prof. Aisha Madawaki Isah, MFR, said that the state government has provided the University with all the required facilities ranging from the constriction of the ultra-modern university library, six number offices complex for academic staff, automation of e-library, supply of books, periodicals, and other e-resources to the University Library, recruitment of additional academic staff among others.

This, she said influenced the full accreditation granted to the university by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

“it is that success that paved the way for the Commission’s approval for the University to commence postgraduate programs and mount additional 16 undergraduate programs, “she said.

She further applauded the Vice-Chancellor for the successes recorded by the University in recent times.

“I believe, with Prof. Bashir Garba as Vice-Chancellor, with the support of his Management team and staff, Sokoto State University will surely become an enviable institution in sub-Saharan Africa,” she said.
