CBN injects N5.21tn into banking system ahead of N700bn NTB auction

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) injected a net N5.21 trillion into the banking system between August 4 and 11, 2026, releasing substantial liquidity ahead of a N700 billion Nigerian Treasury Bills (NTB) auction scheduled for Wednesday.

The liquidity injection was largely driven by repayments on Open Market Operations (OMO) and Treasury Bills instruments that matured during the period.

The largest single-day release occurred on August 11, when the CBN repaid N2.48 trillion through OMO maturities. The amount represented 47.6 per cent of the total N5.21 trillion liquidity released during the week.

The apex bank also made N2.73 trillion in primary-market repayments on August 4 and 6, comprising N2.45 trillion and N283.78 billion respectively.

The development comes as the CBN, acting on behalf of the Debt Management Office (DMO), returns to the primary market with a N700 billion NTB auction after cancelling a similar offer scheduled for August 5.

The latest auction comprises N100 billion each in 91-day and 182-day bills, while N500 billion is allocated to the 364-day instrument, which accounts for about 71.4 per cent of the total offer.

The August 5 auction was withdrawn after the CBN conducted back-to-back OMO operations that absorbed a combined N4.69 trillion from the banking system on August 3 and 4.

Strong demand expected

The fresh liquidity could strengthen demand at Wednesday’s auction as banks and institutional investors have more funds available for investment in government securities.

Recent NTB auctions have recorded significant demand. At the July 29 auction, the CBN allotted about N1.25 trillion against an initial offer of N700 billion, with strong interest concentrated on the 364-day bill.

At the July 8 auction, the stop rate on the one-year Treasury Bill rose to 17.70 per cent from 17.34 per cent, while demand for the 182-day instrument remained relatively weak.

Market participants will therefore be watching the subscription levels and stop rates from the latest auction to determine how the increased banking-system liquidity affects Treasury Bills pricing.

The CBN had absorbed N7.18 trillion from the banking system through OMO sales in July as part of efforts to manage excess liquidity and influence short-term market conditions.

The latest N5.21 trillion repayment highlights the CBN’s alternating approach of withdrawing liquidity through OMO operations and returning funds as securities mature.

For investors, the key outcome will be whether the fresh liquidity results in stronger demand and lower Treasury Bills yields, or whether continued institutional appetite for government securities absorbs the additional funds.
