Kano state Governor, Engineer Abba Kabir Yusuf has described the fight against plastic pollution as the fight for all in order to ensure a healthy environment free of plastic waste.

The Governor stated this while delivering his address at the premises of Yusuf Maitama Sule University as part of the commemorations of Word Environment Day which is set aside by the United  Nations to specifically recognise the need for according to our environment the requisite attention it deserves, with a view to safeguarding humanity annually celebrated worldwide with year’s theme, “Beat Plastic Pollution”

Governor Abba recalled with nostalgia how Kano used to be a land with natural beauty but the effect of indiscriminate dumping of plastic waste is posing a threat to the environmental well-being of the city.

According to the Governor “ Kano is a land blessed with natural beauty, however, like many places around the world we are grappling with adverse effects of plastic pollution” lamented the Governor.

Engineer Abba proffered solutions to the menace “We must be aware of the detrimental impacts of plastic pollution on our environment as well as responsive waste management.

Education is the key to changing behaviours and fostering a culture of environmental stewardship through community engagements, school programs, and public campaigns. We can empower our citizens with the knowledge to make informed choices and take action against plastic pollution.” Explained the Governor.

Engineer Abba added that to fight plastic pollution in Kano, people need to prioritize the reduction of single-use of plastic and businesses, individuals, and government institutions to adopt sustainable alternatives such as; re-use bags, bottles, and packaging by promoting and supporting local initiatives that provide eco-friendly alternatives.

A presentation was made by an Environmentalist, Dr Dahir Hashim on the need for people to play their role in safeguarding and preserving the environment for the well-being of all life on our planet.

At the end of the occasion, the Governor with the support of his deputy and other top government functionaries planted trees at the venue of the occasion and later launched the “Keep Kano Cleen “ campaign at Dandago primary school.
