The Sokoto State Police Command has intensified proactive security operations across the state as part of efforts to combat banditry and other violent crimes.
In a statement issued on April 8, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, said the move aligns with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and is being implemented under the leadership of the State Commissioner of Police, Hayatu Hassan Shaffa.
According to the statement, the Command has adopted intelligence-led policing strategies to identify bandit hideouts and disrupt supply routes used by criminal groups, including those linked to the Lakurawa network. Tactical teams have been deployed to key areas, particularly in the eastern and northern parts of the state, to enhance surveillance and ensure visible policing in high-risk zones.
The Command disclosed that intelligence-driven stop-and-search operations and covert surveillance have been intensified to track and prevent criminal activities. It added that dedicated intelligence units are generating actionable information to support proactive interventions.
To strengthen security coordination, the police said they are working closely with other agencies, including the military and the Department of State Services (DSS), through joint operations and regular strategy meetings aimed at improving responses to emerging threats.
The statement further noted that community engagement has been expanded, involving collaboration with the Sultanate, traditional rulers, community leaders, transport unions, and local government authorities. Residents were urged to provide timely and credible information to security agencies.
Meanwhile, all tactical units, including the Police Mobile Force, have been placed on high alert, conducting round-the-clock patrols in forests, border communities, places of worship, and other public areas.
The Commissioner of Police reassured residents of the Command’s commitment to maintaining peace and security, urging the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through designated emergency lines.
The police reiterated their resolve to sustain intelligence-driven operations and called for continued public support in efforts to rid the state of criminal elements.
