Kaduna-based Desert Herald newspaper publisher Tukur Mamu’s quick transition from hostage negotiator to state security detainee was not very difficult for keen observers to foresee. Since February this year, when terrorists stormed an Abuja-Kaduna bound train and made away with dozens of hostages, Mamu has been in the daily spotlight as the man trusted by the terrorists to conduct negotiations between them, government and the families of hostages. While Ansaru hostage takers trusted Mamu, it was evident from the beginning that government had no faith in him as an honest broker. It was very dangerous work. To begin with, no…

“Look at the past, then you learn about the future.” – Chinese proverb When the Federal Court of Appeal was established in 1976 following Decree (now Cap. C36 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004) the aim was to help lighten the burden of the Supreme Court. In other words, it came to serve as a bridge between the Lower Courts and the Apex Court. Following the series of unfortunate events in our great party ADC since the preparation of national convention some few months back. Mr Dumebi call all State Chairmen an some of their executive members in Abuja to discuss on how to prepare himself for the convention. During the meeting I asked him about his experience in politics, educational background and age but he ignores this is what makes me feel that this man is amateur. The solar system consists of a star called the “Sun” with “nine planets” rotating and revolving around it. Politics, particularly party politics, has a special ambition that is geared towards improving people’s status, or increasing power within a country. The debate between parties having power in a country or activities associated with the governance of a country, also fall within the purview of politics. And in the political arrangement of Nigeria today, the party in power is the All Progressives Congress, APC, which is the party that wrestled power from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, forcing it into the opposition since 2015. Because of the unanticipated nature of that feat, alongside the immense enthusiasm of Nigerians to urgently…

I have had this kind of love and hate relationship with Governor Wike. However, what I will never deny about the Rivers State governor is that he stands out as one of the most courageous and most outspoken political leaders in current day Nigeria. At a time when it is deemed political wisdom to stand equivocated on national and political issues, Wike is one leader you can trust to state his stand and be ready to sink with it. At a time when hypocrisy is seen as the greatest show of wisdom, Wike stands out as one who retains the…

On Monday, ASUU declared to extend the strike it commenced on 14th February, 2022 because: “the demands of the Union had not been satisfactorily addressed. Consequently, NEC resolved to transmute the roll-over strike to a comprehensive, total and indefinite strike action beginning from 12.01am on Monday, 29th August, 2022.” This action is in keeping with the tradition of long strikes to seek redress to ASUU grievances against the federal government. It is phenomenal that in spite of all the changes that have occurred in the last forty years, ASUU has been able to retain its radical engagement for over four…

Dr. Emmanuel Gandu, a veritable ace writer joined me in crying aloud for the youth as we approach 2023, the election year. Gandu provided an analytical situation of our youths, challenges, and potential. As a corollary of my 2-part write-up with the above title, published a few weeks ago, for the reason of space, clarity, and style, I am paraphrasing Gandu’s excellent piece and sharing it with you, my esteemed readers to have a clearer perspective of the youths’ situation – a highly explosive time-bomb or virtuous asset for nation building, depending on how the situation is handled by the…

…Here’s why you should be cautious about believing it Science Magazine recently published a paper in which Chinese scientists reported massive yield gains in rice, thanks to genetic engineering. The journal also promoted the research in a news piece that featured other scientists expressing their amazement at the yield gains achieved. The article suggested the same “genetic tweak” to a single gene could also turbocharge the yields of wheat and other crops. News of this apparent breakthrough in how to boost global food supplies spread like wildfire on social media and triggered press coverage too. But now a young scientist…

On February 14, university lectures in the country under the aegis of Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) declared an indefinite nationwide strike after what its leadership described as the failure of the Federal Government to meet its demands. The declaration of an indefinite strike followed several weeks of warning strikes by the university teachers. Among the demands of the lecturers is the payment of Earned Academic Allowances, revitalisation of public universities through improved funding, a salary payment system different from the Integrated Payroll Personnel Information System (IPPIS) currently used for the payment of federal government workers. ASUU argues that…
