With a root in palliatus, a Latin word, palliative is anything meant to palliate, i.e., relieve, decrease, ease, assuage, soothe, help, etc., a situation. That situation could be a disease, dispute, deprivation or anything that discomfits. While hospitals palliate diseases by administering medicinal palliatives, in our case, the word has taken a political meaning. Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, have seized more than 44,948.1 kilograms of illicit drugs, about 44.9 tonnes, in Lagos, Edo and Ondo states. According to the NDLEA spokesman, Mr Femi Babafemi on Sunday in Abuja, eight suspects were arrested while 11 vehicles were seized from the suspected drug barons. He said 14,310.8625kg of marijuana grown on 5.7 hectares of farms was destroyed in Ohosu-Ugbogui forest, Ovia South West Local Government Area of, Edo, on Tuesday. An Information Communication and Technology (ICT) expert, Dr Nentawe Yilwatda, has said ICT is all-encompassing to address insecurity, agriculture and other sectoral challenges. The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said that prices of beef, rice, beans, onion, white garri, yam, bread, and other food items increased in February 2024. It said this in its Selected Food Prices Watch report for February 2024 released in Abuja on Saturday. The report said that the average price of 1kg of boneless beef increased by 49.41 per cent from N2,445.96 recorded in February 2023 to N3,654.56 in February 2024. “On a month-on-month basis, 1kg of boneless beef increased by 10.22 percent in February from the N3,315.78 recorded in January 2024,’’ the report said.
