The first female chairperson has emerged for the Sokoto state branch of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA). She is Barrister Rashidat Mohammed.
Mohammed and other officers were elected on June 29, 2024 to run the branch’s affairs for the next two years.
Except the offices of the chairperson and the Assistant Secretary of the Association, all other offices were returned unopposed.
Mohammed emerged the charperson by beating Barrister Yahaya Yanusa Gwazawa with 70 votes. Gwazawa scored 68 votes.
For the post of post of Assistant secretary, Barrister Mohammed Anas Shuni got 70 votes to beat his opponent, Barrister Fatima Attahiru Hassan who scored 67 votes.

Those who were returned unopposed are Barrister Mohammed Mansur Aliyu, Vice Chairman; Umar Aliyu, Secretary; Barrister Mohammed Buhari Abubakar, Treasurer; and Ibrahim Sale Zamau Suwaiba, Provost.
Others elected unopposed are Barrister Yusuf Nawawi, Social Secretary; Faruk Abdullahi, Welfare Secretary; and Aminu Hassan, Publicity Secretary.
The chairman of the Electoral Committee, Barrister J E Ochidi SAN called on the new officials to justify the confidence reposed in them.
He also solicited the support and cooperation of all members of the Association to the new executives.
The oath of office was administered by a High Court Judge, Justice Kabiru Mahmud.
In her acceptance speech, Barrister Mohammed thanked members of the association for their support and encouragement, and for giving her the mandate to lead them.
She said the welfare and interest of the entire members of the Association will remain paramount throughout the tenure of her leadership.
“I will continue to represent your interest wherever I find myself,” Mohammed said.
The outgoing chairman, Mohammed Nuhu, expressed appreciation to the entire members of NBA Sokoto for their support and cooperation throughout his two-year tenure in office.
He called on the new executives to work as a team in order to to achieve success.
“Be honest, transparent and truthful to your members,” Nuhu said.
