ASHENEWS reports that the Kwara state government has commenced an investigation into reports of poisonous beef suspected to be in circulation in the state.
This was made known in a statement jointly signed by the state Commissioners of Health and Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Amina El-Imam and Mrs Toyosi Adebayo-Thomas.
The statement said that officials from both ministries on Sunday embarked on an inspection tour at the Mandate Market in Ilorin.
The Kwara state government noted that it has fumigated the abattoir at the market and has shut it down till Wednesday.
“The government has immediately confiscated all the suspected meats for laboratory tests and confirmation of claims after initial engagements with the Mandate Market stakeholders.
“Further information will be given as may become necessary,” the Kwara state government said.
The government urged members of the public to be calm while the team investigates the issue.
It also commended the leadership of the market for their cooperation so far.
It was gathered that the Kwara Monitoring Group (KMG) earlier drew the government to take immediate action against the sale of the poisoned dead cows to unsuspecting members of the public.
According to the group, over 33 cows were suspected to be poisoned and died immediately but surprisingly, the dead animals were slaughtered and distributed out to Butchers to be sold.
The incident was reported to have happened along Atere Road precisely at the College of Arabic and Islamic Studies, Ilorin.
