…..FAO report says 590.3m people will suffer hunger by 2030
ASHENEWS reports that the global roadmap released by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) says that an estimated 590.3 million will suffer hunger by 2030.
The FAO report provides a roadmap to aligning agrifood systems transformation with climate actions, warning that the planet faces crises in the absence of urgent actions.
The roadmap also stresses a holistic approach to transforming agrifood systems in alignment with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to the report, 738.9 million people faced hunger in 2022, 2.4 billion in 2022 were moderately or severely food insecure, and over 3.1 billion lacked access to healthy diets.
“The pandemic added 120 million to the chronically undernourished.“
It warned that without proper adaptation, future food supply and nutrition, especially for vulnerable populations like low- and middle-income countries and small island states facing temperature rises and agricultural challenges will be at risk.
“Agrifood systems face a dilemma: producing more now to address immediate needs, while endangering future food security and nutrition – or curb production to reduce emissions. This perceived trade-off has led to inaction and emboldens climate action skeptics.
“The FAO stresses the urgent need to reform these systems, not only for climate goals but also to boost food security and counter malnutrition, a fundamental aspect of the right to food.
“Producing more nutritious food and improving rural incomes should not harm the environment or lead to higher emissions. Instead, controlling emissions are vital to ensure sustainable global warming limits while actively aiding mitigation efforts.”
It stressed the need for stakeholders to understand the connection between food security, nutrition, health, education, and gender equality (SDG2-5).
It further recommended that countries mobilize climate finance to unlock the potential of these systems and drive their transformation.
