The Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU), Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, says that the university will be graduating her highest number of first-class in her 40 years of history.
Olatunji-Bello made this known at a press conference on Wednesday in Lagos to announce the university’s 26th Convocation Ceremonies to hold on June 21.
The convocation is for the 2020/2021 and 2021/2022 academic sessions.
A law student, Miss Aminat Yusuf, has emerged as the best-graduating student at the Lagos State University (LASU), with a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 5.00.
Olatunji-Bello said that Yusuf belonged to the 2021/2022 academic session.
The vice-chancellor also said that Miss Feyisayo Lopez a physiology graduate of the 2021/2022 academic session finished with a 4.91 CGPA.
“With a total of 282 first-class graduating students in the two academic sessions, the university is, therefore, graduating her highest number of first-class in her 40 years of history.
“The breakdown of the first class graduates is as follows: 2020/2021 academic session, 148 graduates; 2021/2022 academic session, 128 graduates; and sandwich (2022 Modular Year), six graduates.
“The total number of graduating students of 2020/ 2021 and 2021/ 2022 academic sessions is 10,183 students in diploma, first degree, postgraduate diploma, academic master’s degree, professional master’s degree, doctor of philosophy, and professional doctoral degree,’’ Olatunji-Bello said.
She said that LASU would be celebrating the 40th anniversary of its establishment during the convocation ceremonies.
She said that the university was excited at sending off another set of young men and women, who were not just educated but literate and empowered to be solution providers.
“Apart from the 121 who will be awarded doctorate degrees, we shall be conferring honorary doctorate degrees and appreciation awards on eight eminent Nigerians who have made valuable contributions to the development of LASU and our nation.
“In our march towards the fulfillment of our six strategic goals and, ultimately, the vision to become the best university in West Africa, we have recorded some modest achievements since my last convocation address.
“We have, in the last 12 months, mobilized our human and material resources to strengthen the teaching and learning process.
“LASU was ranked the best state university in Nigeria by the AD Scientific Index in 2022, and we secured 96 percent full accreditation in the 2022 National Universities Commission’s accreditation exercise,” Olatunji-Bello said.
