The Kaura Namoda Focus Forum (KNFF) has condemned the Kaduna Electric for its failure to meet up with its mandate of providing electricity for consumers in its franchise.
this is contained in a statement by its spokesperson who is also the Northwest zonal Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Abdulrazak Bello Kaura, mailed to ASHENEWS on Saturday.
“We have observed with utmost dismay, the prevalent condition of power outages in most of the communities in our dear state, especially during the Month of Ramadan.
“The Kaduna Electric Distribution Company has not deemed it necessary to provide any explanation to its teeming customers why this is happening.
“Although, for quite some time, electricity supply in Zamfara state, like in any other states in the country, has been epileptic, however, the ugly development has recently bitten harder in the state.
“It is a known fact that during the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims require frequent frequent, and uninterrupted supply of electricity, to enable them to comfort their souls and body, especially, with the incessant rise of temperature. But this has not been made available.
“We can say therefore, and without fear of contradiction that the Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company (KAEDCO) has failed to fulfill its mandate as contained in the engagement agreement and refused to explain to its customers (consumers) why or what causes the intermittent power outage across the state,” the statement reads.
The forum also faulted the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), for its alleged show of complacency on the plight of the people of Kaura Namoda local government.
“More regrettably, the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), a body responsible for the regulation of electricity supply in the country, has not reacted to the problem as it affects defenseless citizens who rely largely on the National grid for power supply.
“To narrow our agitation down to our community, Kaura Namoda Local government area, the residents in the area have to travel to the state capital or other private places to source ice blocks for their domestic and business uses to enable them to cope with the unfriendly temperature in the area,” the Forum added.
It appealed to NERC, KAEDCO, the Consumer Protection Council, the Servicom, National Human Rights Commission, the security agencies and other concerned authorities to, as a matter of responsibility and urgency, intervene to arrest the situation.
The Forum also advised KEDCO “to recruit qualified and competent staff for their technical and business units to maximize service efficiency thereby minimizing the outrage.”
