Governor of Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello has directed the demolition of some structures within the Minna waterworks, one of which include a divisional police station.
The Governor, who gave the directive when he paid an unscheduled visit to the area said that the Chanchaga Police Station was constructed on top of the water pipeline leading to one of the biggest water reservoirs in Minna.
According to him, over 200 houses were currently experiencing water shortage due to the damage to the pipes.
“It was just brought to my attention some time back and I decided to come and see for myself that there were buildings on the pipeline including this Police station. So they stopped pumping water because there is a burst in the pipeline and water is pouring all over the place. it is very unfortunate.
“the Ministries of Lands and Water Resources should do the needful, they can’t deprive people of water because of few buildings. They should bring them down,” he ordered.
Meanwhile, the Managing Director (M.D) of the Niger state Water and Sewage Corporation, Hassan Mohammed Chado said that although the pipes were laid about a decade before any construction was made on the site, the Corporation had left many notifications to the relevant authorities without response.
