An oldest district head in Kano, Mukhtar Adnan is reported dead.
He was the Sarkin Ban Kano (District Head of Dambatta) and first commissioner of education in Kano.
Adnan died in the early hours of Friday after a brief illness according to family sources.
Sir Muhammadu Sanusi I, then Emir of Kano appointed Adnan as Sarkin Bai in 1954 to succeed his father.
According to a historian and writer on Kano Emirate, Ibrahim Ado Kurawa, Adnan was born in 1926.
He attended Dambatta Elementary School, Kano Middle School and Zaria Clerical School.
Adnan started his working career in the Kano Native Authority where he served in various capacities before his elevation to the position of Sarkin Bai.
He was a Member of the Federal House of Representatives during the first Republic and appointed the first Kano State Commissioner for Education in 1968.
Adnan was the longest serving member of the Kano Emirate Council since the establishment of the Emirate in 19th century and just like his ancestor Dabon Dambazau, who was the longest serving member back in the 19th century.
He served for 63 years as District, Councilor and Kingmaker.
Adnan participated in the selection process of three Emirs: Sarkin Kano Muhammadu Inuwa (1963), Sarkin Kano Ado Bayero (1963-2014), Sarkin Kano Muhammad Sanusi (2014-) and Sarkin Kano Aminu Bayero in 2020.
