The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Saturday, detained former president of the senate, Bukola Saraki over allegations of theft and money laundering, reports in Abuja has revealed.
Sources familiar with the ace politician’s arrest confirmed the development to PREMIUM TIMES.
Saraki, who has faced series of allegations relating to corruption and false declaration of assets, was set free by Nigeria’s Supreme Court in June 2018.
However, the anti-graft agency this time around, detained Saraki on allegations of theft and money laundering, by use of a network of cronies and proxy companies.
PT reports that the suspected proxies, after contracts execution allegedly made returns to Saraki for many years, an act seen as organised network of dirty money flow.
The funds involved were huge, running into hundreds of millions in naira and hundreds of thousands in foreign currencies at various times, sources further told PT.
Reports further say that the EFCC has obtained a list of the proxy companies involved and analysed a pattern of suspicious transactions between them and Saraki.
One of the proxies is reported to be responsible to have paid over a hundred million to settle the bills for rent and renovation of Saraki’s Maitama residence.
