Media personality Pamilerin Adegoke has urged the Lagos State Government to strengthen flood prevention and management measures, saying flooding in other countries should not excuse inadequate protection for residents.
Adegoke made the call in a post on his X account following discussions about recent flooding in Istanbul, Turkey.
He said that although flooding was a global challenge, Lagos should be assessed based on its preparedness, drainage infrastructure, urban planning and response to flood incidents.
“Flooding may be a global phenomenon, but Lagos deserves better protection,” he said.
Adegoke noted that Lagos, as a coastal megacity experiencing rapid urbanisation, faced unique challenges that made effective planning and flood management essential.
He stressed that flooding in other cities should not distract attention from the need to protect residents and property in Lagos.
His comments added to public discussions about the state’s flood management efforts and whether existing measures were sufficient to address the recurring challenge.
Effective drainage systems, proper urban planning and adequate preparedness are important measures for reducing flood risks in urban areas.
