The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has elevated terrorism financing supervision as a current priority as part of efforts to prevent the country’s financial system from being exploited by illicit actors.
The apex bank disclosed this in a press statement issued on Tuesday by the Acting Director, Corporate Communications and Investor Relations Department, Hakama Sidi-Ali.
According to the CBN, the enhanced supervisory focus will cover key areas including terrorism financing risk management, transaction monitoring, implementation of targeted financial sanctions and the reporting of suspicious transactions linked to terrorism financing.
The bank said it would continue to apply a risk-based supervisory approach, involving both on-site and off-site engagements, to strengthen Anti-Money Laundering, Countering the Financing of Terrorism and Countering Proliferation Financing (AML/CFT/CPF) controls across the financial sector.
The CBN said the approach would be implemented in line with existing legal and regulatory obligations.
The apex bank added that the supervisory focus supports Nigeria’s ongoing domestic and international cooperation in countering terrorism financing and proliferation financing, while strengthening financial integrity and protecting the financial system.
“Further supervisory engagement will be undertaken as appropriate,” the CBN said.
The development underscores the regulator’s increased attention to measures designed to prevent illicit financial flows and ensure that financial institutions maintain effective controls against terrorism financing risks.
The statement was dated September 8, 2026.
