The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast cloudy skies, thunderstorms and moderate to heavy rains across the country from Monday to Wednesday.
NiMet stated this in its weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja, advising residents to take precautions during thunderstorms.
Monday
In the northern region, the agency forecast thunderstorms with moderate rains over parts of Adamawa, Kebbi and Taraba in the morning, followed by thunderstorms with moderate rains over most parts of the region later in the day.
In the North-Central region, thunderstorms with light rains are expected over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Plateau, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Kwara, particularly in the morning. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are forecast over most parts of the region in the afternoon or evening.
In the southern region, cloudy skies with light rains are expected over parts of Ebonyi, Edo, Delta, Abia, Cross River, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Rivers and Bayelsa in the morning. Light rains are also predicted over parts of the South-East, South-South and South-West later in the day.
Tuesday
Patches of clouds are expected over the northern region, with chances of thunderstorms and light rains over parts of Adamawa, Sokoto, Kebbi and Taraba in the morning. Thunderstorms with moderate rains are forecast later over parts of Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Sokoto, Zamfara and Kebbi.
Cloudy skies are expected across the North-Central region in the morning, followed by thunderstorms with moderate rains later in the day.
In the southern region, cloudy skies are anticipated, with light morning rains over parts of Cross River and Akwa Ibom, and light rains over most parts of the region later in the day.
Wednesday
Partly cloudy skies are expected across the northern region, with morning thunderstorms over Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kebbi, Sokoto and Zamfara. Thunderstorms with heavy rains are forecast later over parts of Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Bauchi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina and Gombe.
In the North-Central region, cloudy skies are expected in the morning, followed by thunderstorms with heavy rains later in the day.
In the southern region, cloudy skies are forecast, with light morning rains over parts of Imo, Abia, Rivers, Cross River and Akwa Ibom. Heavy rains are possible over most parts of the region later in the day.
NiMet warned that strong winds could precede thunderstorms and urged residents to secure loose objects. The agency advised motorists to avoid driving during heavy rainfall, residents to disconnect electrical appliances during thunderstorms, and people to stay away from tall trees to prevent injuries from falling branches.
“Airline operators are advised to get airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning in their operations,” it said.
NiMet urged residents to stay informed through regular weather updates and take appropriate precautions during severe weather.
