A farmer, Mr. Onuoha Nnachi, and stakeholders in Ebonyi have called on the federal and state governments to deepen agro-business investments to enhance food security and strengthen the nation’s economy.

Nnachi made the appeal on Wednesday during the new yam festival, known as “Iyi Akpa Oke Ikeji,” held at El Dorado Village, Ezzi-Edda Community in Edda Local Government Area, Ebonyi.

He stated that the country has enormous agricultural potential but needs greater focus to transform farming from a subsistence activity into a viable business that can create employment and wealth.

The farmer emphasized the need for government at all levels to provide farmers with improved seedlings, modern inputs, accessible credit, and appropriate technology to boost productivity.

He added that strengthening the entire agricultural value chain—from production to processing, storage, transportation, and marketing—is vital to reducing post-harvest losses and ensuring a steady food supply.

Nnachi also called for the establishment of more agro-processing industries in rural areas, enabling farmers to add value to their produce and earn better incomes.

He noted that such initiatives would encourage youth participation in agriculture, reduce rural-urban migration, and create opportunities for small and medium-scale agro-businesses.

Regarding the festival, Nnachi said cultural events like this offer an opportunity to celebrate agricultural heritage and highlight farming’s economic importance.

He pointed out that the yam festival is not just a cultural event but also a reflection of the community’s reliance on agriculture for food, livelihood, and development.

He urged farmers to adopt modern practices, form cooperatives, and explore processing and other value chain opportunities.

Mr. Joe Ekuma-Nkama, APC aspirant for Afikpo/Edda Federal Constituency in the upcoming elections, praised the people of Edda for promoting their culture.

Ekuma-Nkama, a former Minister of State for Health, pledged support for nation-building and adequate representation if elected.

Chief Charles Azuenya, traditional ruler of Ebunwana Edda Autonomous Community, on behalf of other traditional rulers, thanked God for the harvest and prayed for continued blessings.

The “Iyi Akpa Oke Ikeji” festival gathered community members and guests to celebrate the harvest and Ezzi-Edda’s cultural heritage.

It was noted that agriculture remains a key livelihood in Ebonyi, with farmers producing yam, rice, cassava, vegetables, and other crops.

Other traditional rulers present included Mr. Obo Okorie of Umunna, Oko Ama of Etiti Edda, Ama Uzor of Owutu Edda, and John Igwe of Ekoli Edda.
