The Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID) has awarded sustainability grants to seven Nigerian media organisations in a move aimed at strengthening newsroom resilience, innovation and long-term financial viability.
CJID Executive Director, Akintunde Babatunde, disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abuja.
The seven beneficiaries of the CJID Media Sustainability Grant are:
- International Centre for Investigative Reporting (ICIR)
- TheCable
- News Central TV
- WikkiTimes
- The Informant247
- Prime Progress
- EduCeleb
The grants are intended to help these organisations strengthen their institutional sustainability through improved business models, audience engagement, revenue diversification and newsroom resilience.
The grants were presented in Lagos during a media sustainability programme organised by CJID, where the organisation reaffirmed its commitment to supporting independent journalism through capacity building, innovation and diversified revenue models.
According to CJID, the initiative is designed to help beneficiary media organisations develop sustainable business models, improve operational efficiency and enhance their ability to produce quality public interest journalism despite the growing financial pressures facing the media industry.
Speaking at the event, CJID officials noted that many media organisations continue to grapple with declining advertising revenues, rising operational costs and the impact of digital disruption. They stressed that building sustainable newsrooms is critical to safeguarding press freedom, accountability and democratic governance.
The beneficiaries are expected to utilise the grants to implement sustainability plans tailored to their organisations, including strengthening digital operations, diversifying revenue streams and improving newsroom management.
CJID said the intervention forms part of its broader efforts to promote media innovation and ensure that independent news organisations remain financially viable while delivering credible, fact-based journalism to the public.
The organisation added that it will continue to support initiatives that enhance media independence, strengthen accountability reporting and equip newsrooms with the skills and resources needed to thrive in a rapidly changing media landscape.
