According to reports, Mastercard told Nigerian officials that it currently facilitates about $2 billion in foreign exchange inflows into Nigeria annually through its various payment and remittance platforms. The company also highlighted its anti-fraud capabilities, noting that its technologies help prevent nearly $200 billion worth of fraudulent transactions globally each year.
The discussions with the CBN are understood to have focused on:
- Strengthening Nigeria’s digital payments ecosystem.
- Expanding financial inclusion through innovative payment solutions.
- Deepening collaboration on cross-border payments and remittances.
- Enhancing cybersecurity and fraud prevention within Nigeria’s financial system.
- Supporting ongoing reforms aimed at modernising Nigeria’s payment infrastructure.
The visit comes at a time when the CBN, under Cardoso’s leadership, is pursuing reforms to improve payment system efficiency, promote cashless transactions, and attract greater foreign investment into the financial sector.
Mastercard’s engagement is also viewed as a vote of confidence in Nigeria’s ongoing financial sector reforms.
