The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has reported the death of a 103-year-old woman following a fire outbreak at 8 Bola Street in the Oyingbo area of Lagos State.
The Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed the incident in a statement to newsmen on Friday.
He said the agency received distress calls at 11:43 a.m. through the 767/112 emergency lines, prompting an immediate response from its Onipanu base.
According to Oke-Osanyintolu, responders arrived at the scene around 12:13 p.m. and found a residential bungalow with two attached shops fully engulfed in flames.
He explained that the fire reportedly started in one room before spreading to other parts of the building. The exact cause is still under investigation.
LASEMA officials conducted a risk assessment, cordoned off the area, and implemented safety measures to prevent the fire from spreading to neighboring buildings.
Coordinated efforts by the LASEMA Response Team, LASEMA Fire Unit, and Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service successfully brought the blaze under control.
The fire affected eight room-and-parlour units, one self-contained mini flat, six shops, and several properties.
Oke-Osanyintolu said the remains of the deceased were recovered and handed over to her family. Rescue, recovery, and dampening operations have been concluded.
He listed responders at the scene as LASEMA teams, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Nigeria Police Force, Lagos Neighborhood Safety Corps, and officials of Lagos Mainland Local Government.
