Senator Aminu Waziri Tambuwal has called on residents of Sokoto State, particularly those in Sokoto South, to remain calm and law-abiding following reports of a counterterrorism airstrike conducted through cooperation between the Federal Government of Nigeria and the United States.
In a statement issued on Friday, the senator said he had taken note of public concerns surrounding the reported operation and assured constituents that he was engaging relevant security authorities to obtain full details on the circumstances of the airstrike.
“I wish to assure the people of Sokoto South that I am in active talks with relevant security authorities to obtain full details and ensure that all necessary safeguards are upheld,” Tambuwal said.
He emphasized that counterterrorism operations are designed to target criminal and terrorist elements threatening public safety, not innocent civilians who are often victims of insecurity.
According to him, the protection of civilian lives remains paramount and central to all legitimate security engagements.
Tambuwal also commended the Nigerian military and security agencies for their courage and professionalism, noting that they continue to operate under extremely challenging conditions, sometimes in collaboration with international partners, to confront terrorism and banditry.
“Their sacrifice and commitment to restoring peace and stability deserve our full support and cooperation,” he stated.
The senator further urged community leaders, traditional institutions, and residents to work closely with security agencies by providing credible information and resisting misinformation capable of heightening fear or tension within communities.
He stressed that unity, vigilance, and support for lawful security efforts are essential to overcoming terrorism and securing lasting peace in Sokoto State and Nigeria as a whole.
